The theme of the café began to become topical again in Estonian art in the 1960s, when it was associated with the onslaught of modern life. The café culture became part of the Khrushchev Thaw, speaking of a freer public space, stronger bonds between people and Western-influenced modernity. Marran is one of the first to look boldly at the café space. His focus here is on the rise of youth culture. At the age of 28, he depicts young women and men in fashionable clothes and coquettish poses. Painting exudes freedom and youthfulness, flirtation and attention, as well as fashion and style.
