The red and green lights of opposite colours give the work as a whole an amplification, which is emphasised by the title Tähelepanu! (Attention!). Marko Mäetamm’s colour lithography bets a little on old-fashioned characters and technologies, aiming for carelessness, cool mood, and humour. As a young artist, in the early 1990s, Mäetamm developed for himself a super-optimistic style of depiction that was a mix of the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine cartoon, an American wonderland represented by Kalev Mark Kostabi, Matisse, and who knows what else. Today, Marko Mäetamm is one of the most successful and prolific artists in Estonia, who has performed twice at the Venice Biennale. Time is gracious to Mäetamm’s youthful works, they have stood the test of time. The printing process of colour lithography is exceptionally complex and laborious – each colour spot must be printed separately, matching in the right place on the paper surface.
