Evald Okas, an acknowledged talent in Soviet art, was allowed to travel to capitalist countries such as Italy, Japan, and France during the Cold War, although the artist was not a member of the party. The characteristic portraits of Japanese women auctioned by HAUS represent generalisations of the bearers of Japanese culture rather than specific individuals. Created with a fine line, the images convey the artist’s extraordinary talent for drawing and eye for unconventional beauty.
