A groundbreaking work by 18-year-old Erich Pehap, who is just graduating from high school in Viljandi. The haphazard nature of the underlying material, as the cityscape is painted on sackcloth, speaks of a strong desire to create art. We can see how the artist combines in his view the low wooden houses of suburb and the magnificent church building, with its complex architectural composition and several towers adding to the majesty. Pehap has paid a striking amount of attention to the clouds and the wider sky, which dictate the mood of the painting: the cityscape is complemented by an atmosphere that is spacious and spring-like.
