Valdur Ohakas, like Elmar Kits, was a very prolific and versatile artist. He drew inspiration from a wide range of artistic movements, and in the 1960s alone experimented with both the ‘hard style’ and cubism. This powerful glimpse into the courtyard of the Old Town differs markedly from the souvenir paintings of the time, which viewed the Old Town without any particular artistic pretension. For Ohakas, the motif is the raw material on which to build a work with a wild brushstroke, clear contours, and unexpected colouring. Instead of romance, there is mysticism, instead of a beautiful view, there is a brave escape.
