Red peppers, green leeks with washed roots, cold yellow lemon, probably beets and potatoes - all these flawlessly painted gifts of nature, illuminated against a dark background, signal the presence of vitamins and ecological life. In the life of the 1980s, the roots of vegetables were earthy, but in the life of 2022, in the context of vertical crop cultivation, the roots can be left clean from start to finish, just like in the painting by Malle Leis.
For an esthete, all details are important - even a seemingly small thing like the format of a painting. The length of the painting is twice as much as the width - a rare choice in Estonian art.
Currently, it can be said that Malle Leis is one of the few Estonian artists whose works have been written about by international researchers. The cover of the second issue (July 2022) of the fresh English-language Estonian art magazine "A Shade Colder" has a reproduction of a painting by Malle Leis and a text by California art historian Andrew Berardin, see: https://www.ashadecolder.com/the-floral-fantasias-and- pop-potentials-on-the-work-of-malle-leis
Also in Tartu Art Museum in 2015. in the published Malle Leis monograph, the text is written by Bojana Pejić, curator of Eastern European art exhibitions, Belgrade feminist art researcher residing in Berlin.
