Johannes Võerahansu was one of the most prolific creators of self-portraits, who captured himself again and again. In this 1944 introspection, he is masterfully sparse. Without wasting much of a single brushstroke or paint, he is able to create a generalization using only a few tools. Looking at the painting, we can immediately understand the author's state of mind and emotions: he is a little cautious, serious, maybe even thoughtful, but still looks at us trustingly. Good self-portraits never speak only about the author, but can speak much more broadly about being a person - like this work.
