Boris Niinemäe was a peculiar artist whose yearning for artistic means of expression did not care about external obstacles. In exile, he continued to paint and it became a form of therapy, since it allowed him to relive domestic scenes and familiar motifs. He became particularly fond of coastal motifs, repeatedly depicting fishermen in their daily but admirable activities. Travelling extensively all over the world, however, he preferred to reminisce about archaic fishing activities when he started painting. In this painting, the memory is heightened by the fact that people’s faces seem to have been erased – but the more vivid are the remaining colours. The powerful, strong brushstrokes leave no doubt that Niinemäe is convinced of his ambitions, and instead of gentle reminiscence, he wants to rebuild a lost world.
