Edgar Valter, a well-known and beloved illustrator of children’s books, without whose emotional pictures one cannot imagine, for example, the books and movies of Eno Raud’s Naksitrallid (Three Jolly Fellows), is less well known as a painter. Oma saar (An Island of One’s Own) visualises a somewhat paradisiacal situation where the sun is shining and there are no clouds in the sky. The title of the painting also has a bearing on cultural history – Gustav Suits has composed poetry about one’s own island and the rock band Ruja made a song out of it in 1975, while also in 1975, Mark Soosaar made the documentary Oma saar (An Island of One’s Own), in 1977, Aadu Hint published the novel Oma saar (An Island of One’s Own), and this theme has also been apparent during the song festivals. The auction of HAUS Gallery thus features Edgar Valter’s version of his own island. As a reminder, however, let Gustav Smoke’s poem Oma saar (An Island of One’s Own) sound in a more modern performance.
