Silvi Liiva best represents the group of Estonian female graphic artists, who rose to prominence in the 1960s and then quietly began to define for decades what ‘good graphic art’ means at all. Silvi Liiva’s portrayal style leaves hints, she does not depict everything, so the silence is as telling as the visuals on her pages. As an artist, Silvi Liiva draws on a woman’s spiritual experiences – not the bodily ones that came from the art of the 1990s in relation to feminist theory. Important fact here is, above all, the sensitivity of the line, the special cognition with which the invisible is made visible.
