Oskar Georg Adolf Hoffmann is indisputably a celebrity in the older Estonian art history. After the initial studies in Tartu, Hoffmann headed for the already legendary Düsseldorf Art Academy, where his teacher was Eugen Gustav Dücker. Study trips to Germany and Paris elaborated Hoffmann’s painting technique experiences to perfectness, to which the last polish was given by living and working in St. Petersburg. “Saanisõit” is undoubtedly on a special position in Hoffmann’s creation. With this work he received the medal of the Art Academy of St. Petersburg. Hoffmann, being the honourable member of the same Academy, has really gathered here all challenges that faced a painter of the 19. century. Depicting of rushing horses, studying of the problems of light-shadow, truthful abundance of details, brilliant brush technique and skilful use of colour combinations have been solved with flying colours. These are values that make the work unique not in the creation of Hoffmann himself, but in the whole art of the second half of the 19. century.
