Andres Tolts is valued in the local art history mainly as a pop-artist, who was the first one to introduce in his creation the urban perception of the world. But Tolts was certainly not a “pop-artist” in the classical meaning of the word, receiving courage from things happening elsewhere in the world, but still working out his very personal picture language. Both of the presented works are not desireless depictions, but they are proceeding from personal experience. “Kapp” is depicting the cabinet that is even now in the artist’s own studio. The unoriginal serial product from the Soviet era becomes a piece of art. Tolts himself has emphasized the contradictions: the cupboard and interior have been painted on the basis of cold calculations, at the extreme verge of realism. But from the open door of the cupboard we can suddenly see the turbulence of colours, endless creative freedom, having been painted in the spirit of abstractionism.
