Karl Alexander von Winkler arrived at art only after the studies of comparative linguistic science. Still, he rapidly became an extremely popular author, whose popularity in Tallinn at the beginning of the century can only be measured with that of Ants Laikmaa. Of the Baltic-German artists, having worked here, he was regarded without any doubt of being the best one, his works were purchased and at a very high price. Similarily to many others, Winkler travelled a lot, arriving at homeland only in 1907. Most probably at such a trip was also accomplished “Napoli” – a charming and picturesque view of Italy, which is not ashamed of being romantic.
Here is contradicted to the apocalyptic, avant-garde or national-romantic ideas, prevailing in the Estonian art at that period an idyllic view, which is not spoilt by a single mistake.
