Paul Burman is known in the first range because of his works of animals and landscapes. As he worked quickly and intensively, he left an outstanding creative heritage, the majority of which is formed by small-format improvisational works. The present water-color work actually does show us Burman from another angle. As a real rarity, “Kalasadam” is a large figural composition, on the surface of which are being solved a number of most complicated tasks in painting. During the accomplishment of the present work Burman was young, he was full of vitality and ready to accept new impulses. The fish port, drawing together different types of people, is therefore especially alluring for the artist. With extraordinary interest he is concentrating on different characters, depicting also the clothes’ fashion of that period, but simultaneously rendering the whole spirit of the year 1910. What people were thinking about, how they worked and lived – one can make several assumptions on these topics while looking at “Kalasadam”. Thrilling is also Burman’s handling of the perspective of the bench, entering the picture, but gripping are also his room logics, sense of colour and the skill to be aerial and use the dispersion of colour that is characteristic to water-colours.
