Nigul Espe’s “Suvine maastik” belongs in many senses into the era of its painting. From one side can be happy these people, who in the 1950ies demanded realistic art. From here we can find everything: topographic exactness, architectural details, clear climatic conditions. But from the other hand Espe lets all the demanders down. Even though at the first glance being realistic, he is contrasting different forms, patterns and colours in such a manner that the general impression will be joyful and vital. Here is no sign of depression anymore. And no wonder – the work is depicting the dear-to-heart homeland landscape in its most natural form.
