Kalju Nagel originates from the generation that still felt Tartu café atmosphere, which was carried by the Pallas spirit, but was cut off from the world art metropolises. Therefore Nagel’s choices are simple and clear, resembling in their concreteness the honesty of a country boy. He is depicting his homeland, but is not covering it with foreign air. Everything is exactly the way it is supposed to be, everything is familiar and homely, offering at the same time the sense of security and yearning. This is also reflected by the manner of painting, which is using of unmixed colours and bold brush strikes. Nagel is painting home – and is doing it in the only possible sincere and direct manner.
