Salome Trei has by today remained one of the most mysterious Estonian artists. Even though there were other female graphical artists studying in „Pallas“, then only a few were able to continue as artist after starting of a family and only very few (besides Trei maybe also Karin Luts) were able to become significant artists. Trei’s intimate, almost modest manner favoured the depiction of everyday and simple motifs. Still, each of her works includes a short story that makes us think that we are dealing with an illustration to some kind of fictional text. Trei’s trumps are in addition to professional handicraft skills also deep empathic ability and a superb ability to grasp the nuances of the human life. And these are not taught at any art school.
