Trees and landscapes

The current exhibition displays about ten large-format coal drawings made last year – but none of those drawings is just a drawing, not just a tree or a landscape as it may appear at first glance. Isn’t it so often paradoxical that everything apparent is not necessarily real and everything that seems like a convincing reality may at one point turn out to be only apparent.

The relationships of the material and the immaterial and the focal points of our observation ability are the things that Jarõna Ilo contemplates upon in her works. On those large paper formats she plays with the angles of things and objects, enhances the singular against the background of general and vice versa, exploring the nature of the blossom as deeply as that of the bush. It seems as if the artist would like to make us stop and notice the moment when the whole mystery of life unfolds itself in a single twisted shoot of an apple tree. Thousands of different beginnings and ends are revealed, so unfamiliar and so personal at the same time. These are pictures in front of which one should take time out and think finally through those thoughts that are never pressing enough as they are too existential. It is meditation that the artist enters into through her creation and whereto she wants to direct the viewer as well – and all that not without a purpose.
