Haus Galerii is hosting a painting exhibition “A Different Kind of Reality” by Indrek Aava, where flesh and bone human beings from commonplace reality meet with legendary two-dimensional cartoon characters.

“All of us have childhood memories of cartoon characters who have become our indisputable companions although we do not think about them all the time, they are beside us both on the TV screen and in our everyday actions,” said Indrek Aava, explaining how the inspirational animated stars also reflect in ourselves because human beings are their prototypes. He thinks that adults often tend to forget their inner child, who actually continues to live in them. “I am trying to revive a memory as such, from the past to today, from heroes to people, all this through art by bring the lifeless alive and making the living lifeless.”

The exhibition connects the lifeless animated world with the living real world, taking stereotypes and significant symbols to the level of the individual in order to find their personal contact-points and relationships, to create a new and different kind of reality. In addition to cartoons, the artist has also been inspired by metaphysical art, synthetic cubism, and surrealism.

Indrek Aava (1977) started practising painting in 2005, in Finland, at the Järvenpää Vocational Institute, where he was studying advertising graphics. He has been participating in exhibitions since 2009 and his works can be found in private collections in Estonia, Finland, France, Spain, Belgium, Sweden, China, Russia, and Italy.
