August Künnapu

Assortii / Babylon

Exhibition „Assortii / Babylon“by August Künnapu has a springly fresh taste that consists of colorful characters, both animals and humans.

One of the favourite artists of the painter August Künnapu, David Hockney, created many pool paintings, but never a separate exhibitionabout them. Similarly, Künnapu has many different favourite topics, from which he has gathered a mixed and a colourful selection that he calls “Assortii / Babylon”. In the exhibition opened in Haus Gallery one can, amongst everything else, see athletes and folk dancers, cats and dogs and the latestfavourites of the artist – horses. Just as Hockney was influenced by many movements, so was Künnapu, one can see the influence of cubism, art deco, retro and pop-art in his works. This altogether creates an effectively multifaceted result. The paintings of Künnapu have sometimes been said to be naive and “just pretty”, but some have seen a lot of psychological depth in there and “an appropriate dose of tragedy.”

From 13–17 June, there will be an audience game in the framework of the program of Tallinn Art Week, in which prizes will be raffled between the contestants. The program starts with the gallery tour of Tallinn Tuesday and ends with the art day of the Freedom Square.

August Künnapu(1978) has studied architecture and painting as a minor subject in the Estonian Academy of Arts, from which he graduated in 2002. He has educated himself also in 2000 at the Slade Summer School in University College London. At the moment he is a freelance artist. As one of the most striking artists of the younger generation, August Künnapu has painted himself to this art worldas a sign, we recognize him by the use of colors and the way of depiction and by the somewhat angular hand of the painter.
