On Tuesday, 10 January, the exhibition "Moment", by Orest Kormashov, will open in the Haus Gallery. The exhibited works were born on the basis of the impressions of Southern Italy. A few years ago, the artist, in cooperation with the gallery, exhibited moments from Rome – on this occasion it is the Basilicata region that is being represented.

"October in Southern Italy is characterized by warmth, light and peace. Coastal cities are deserted, the seafront is clear, only the mountain villages are home to gatherings for the weekend harvest festivities," says Orest Kormashov. "Around the time of the Chestnut Festival the streets are filled with people; somewhere there is music playing and people are dancing, while outdoor counters sag under the weight of hams, cheeses and wine, and the square smells of fried chestnuts."

The days in Basilicata are characterized by the charm of quiet hours and the train passing between the mountains, waking one from their afternoon siesta; while in the darkness of the evening it is still warm, and weak streetlights illuminate the rugged walls of the medieval city. Breathtaking and refreshing views here are a natural part of nature and are also slowly becoming a natural part of the viewer. These are the moments the artist has tried to capture, at the same time recognizing that any attempt to realise even a fraction of the beauty and richness of the world given for perception is doomed to failure.

Orest Kormashov (1964) graduated in 1990, from the State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR, with a degree in painting and has since served as a lecturer at the University of Tallinn. He has been participating in exhibitions since 1986, and has been a member of the Estonian Artists' Association since 1995. In addition to creative work, he is also actively involved in organizing scientific and artistic events in Estonia and abroad.

The exhibition "Moment" will be open in the Haus Gallery until 14 February 2017.
