Krista Mölder
1972
Krista Mölder herself admits that her series Landmarks can be considered subjective cartography. Using the clarity of her memories as a scale and irrational perception as a formula for calculations, she moves around the world and takes pictures of what would make up a place called “Me” on her personal version of the globe. She is like the former Estonian president Lennart Meri, who scribbled down a great fishing spot on the world map in the White House with a purple marker: knowing that no-one ever will go and check if there is any salmon or zander to be found there. The ritual gesture is what’s important: The world map of the White House, perhaps one of the most important maps in the world, suddenly turned into something subjective, unreliable, poetic and irrational. Mölder’s new age dabbling has more than a few role models. Quite a few authors have been going out with a camera to discover themselves and I am not confident enough to claim that the landscapes of the 20th century world classic Konrad Mägi are not hangouts of his own personal desires. But Mölder’s landmarks have a new kind of a shift that seems to be a good reflection of the era she is travelling in.
