Illimar Paul studied at the Estonian Academy of Arts (1966–1968) and the Leipzig School of Graphic and Book Art (1968–1971), has been a member of the Estonian Artists' Union since 1970 and is mainly engaged in freelance printing (screen printing), but also ex-libris, watercolor, poster and book design. He is active as a freelance artist and has participated in over 230 exhibitions worldwide.
