Raul Meel (b. 1941) is regarded as an artist who would have been world-famous, had the local conditions been different. Despite the constant censorship during the Soviet era, Meel managed to win highly important awards and participate in reputable exhibitions. Today, Meel is internationally known and represented by galleries outside of Estonia as well. His art has always been multi-faceted, but printmaking has had a special role in that. Meel tends to use very laconic imagery, but that opens up a possibility to see an even bigger picture in his artworks. The artist often combines reality with geometrical spaces, such as in the series “Aknad ja maastikud” from the beginning of the 1990s. An observant viewer will find those artworks relatable.
