Kaljo Põllu

1934–2010

Kaljo Põllu (1934–2010) was born in Western Estonia, graduated Tartu Music College as a conductor in 1954 and State Art Institute of the Estonian SSR as a glassmith in 1962. He was the founder of "Visarid", one of the most radical art groups in Soviet Estonia. There he would introduce and communicate contemporary Western art movements that were harshly criticized or even forbidden by the Soviet state. His later work largely revolves around Finno-Ugric mythology. As well as being a successful freelance artist, Põllu illustrated books and taught art in universities for many years.
