Valdur Ohakas had not finished art school when he was arrested and sent to a prison camp for years. He was released two years before this painting was completed. Here we see liberation in every sense. The author does not adhere to the artistic norms of the 1950s, but works in an experimental way: forms are dispersed, realistic recognisability is almost irrelevant, Ohakas boldly explores the possibilities of generalisation and colours take on an independent meaning. The green and yellow backdrop creates an abstract environment in which improvisationally rendered figures are planted. The sense of liberation is heightened by the scene’s summer mood and the introduction of a stylish sunglasses motif. An astonishing work from an author recently released from a prison camp, who daringly breaks the mould of the times and seeks freedom in life and art.
