Malle Leis
(1940–2017)

Oil, canvas. 100 x 100 cm (framed)

Another extraordinarily magnificent painting by Malle Leis, who specialised in depicting the soul life of plants and fruits in an aesthetic way. All the choices in her paintings are important down to the details, including the format. In this case, the format is 100 × 100 cm, or square, which painters generally consider a difficult case and try to avoid it. It is as if Malle Leis has illuminated selected fruits with point light, which still distract from the square format of the painting. At the same time, the square as a geometric figure has a centuries-old deep meaning in Christian art and architecture, referring to eternity. Today, in 2023, the title of the painting has a slightly more humorous effect than in 1989, when a completely different regime reigned in Estonia.
