Representing a strong masculine self-awareness as an artist, the women painted by Jaan Toomik can be a little startling in their bodily honesty. However, the drawing seeks contact with the woman's spiritual side, capturing her momentary gaze, while the woman herself is located in a protective cocoon, as it were. The viewed faces the viewer and it has become a colorful drawing.
Jaan Toomik studied painting at the Estonian Academy of Arts in the 1980s, which was the most prestigious choice in the arts hierarchy at that time. However, after the political upheavals in the 1990s, international curators instead chose his installations and videos for exhibitions in different countries, with which he became the most internationally recognized Estonian artist. The aesthetics of the video have also left their mark on Jaan Toomik's further paintings.
