Blind Man Reads a Book (Self-Portrait). 1970

The painter is reading a book, wearing a jacket or coat with a white shirt underneath and a tie with stripes on the front. This book must be an important book. The self-portrait does, however, appear to be self-ironic – according to Peeter Mudist’s interesting language, which often made veiled critical allusions. The artist in the picture is only 28 years old and apparently still creating his relationship with the world. According to the title, there is an emphasis on the eyes in the depiction – ‘blind’ here, of course, has a figurative meaning, it is a metaphor. In this case, the book seems to be smarter than the reader. Dramatically upright hair and a dramatic background seem to be in sync with the artist’s inner life. Ofort is an image scraped onto a metal plate and printed in mirror image on a paper surface.
