Günther Reindorff, the graphic artist who designed the banknotes, had a perfect command of both detail and generalisation – as can be seen in this drawing of an ethnographic motif. Already his autograph in the bottom right-hand corner is elegant and stylised like calligraphy. In a good sense, Reindorff represents a traditional relationship with art, but in addition to his sensitive and highly accurate depictions of nature, he has also created imaginative illustrations for Kreutzwald’s Eesti rahva ennemuisted jutud (Ancient Tales of Estonian People) (1951), giving the impression that he has actually seen all the characters somewhere in the woods.
