Richard Kivit was an artist in exile who managed to work as a caricaturist and drawing teacher before leaving. This work, made while away from home, seeks peace and serenity. Instead of the anxiety and tension felt by many refugees, Kivit wants to create a view of nature where everything is in absolute harmony. The specific and clear patches of colour in the foreground become more general and diffuse as they shift into the distance, eventually reaching an almost endless horizon. Kivit’s colour palette is flat and understated: the brown and bluish colour fields should give the viewer a sense of security.
