Aleksander Vardi had a special ability to move in the dimmest corners of the palette, but to create a harmonious whole out of these ineffective colours. His landscapes are often painted as if through the morning mist: perceived rather than seen. Vardi prefers mood to realism, atmosphere is more important to him than verisimilitude or detail. In this painting, Vardi uses a rather unfamiliar format, which he has stitched through with a supple and dense brushwork that adds a vivid cascade of brushstrokes to the dreamlike quality of the colours.
