Mall Nukke started a series of ironic ‘modern icons’ in the 1990s, and this is something similar. An outwardly striking visual of gold and silver, an occult Egyptian cross (with a buckle), a reptile and a lovely woman’s face, so what is it? There is no need to look for sincerity in a postmodern cultural context, there are many visual traps. Assuming this is the case, should there be any warning in the picture? Some ethical distraction or didactic phrase? It will then have to be looked up. Isn’t there a compass depicted in a single swirling pattern? Sputnik? Aren’t these colours too painfully burning? Mall Nukke started as a young artist in the 1990s in the neo-pop movement, as did Marko Mäetamm – both have stuck with the neo-pop method to this day, developing it in different directions.
