A very rare watercolour by Gori, internationally renowned as a caricaturist. We can see here the interest in Art Nouveau characteristic of his youthful caricatures, as the long, silhouetted tree trunks evoke Art Nouveau elegance, but Gori’s profound depictions of shadows and his romanticisation of nature carry a more personal point of view. Born and raised in the city, Gori’s approach to nature is slightly different from that of his contemporaries: we see a greater emphasis on ornamentation, and instead of drama and tension, Gori seeks beauty and harmony above all. As a caricaturist, the watercolour reveals a very different side of the artist, who has accurately and critically captured the pain points of society, and his artistic aspirations, of which little was previously known.
