The creation of Aleksander Vardi (Bergman) of the first half of the 1930ies belongs to the treasury of the Estonian art history. It was time, being simultaneously rare, brilliant and original, when Vardi concentrated on the motifs of homeland and when his painter’s handwriting was still not very clearly influenced by late French impressionism. His view of Tartu makes also a close incision into Vardi’s personal biography, who himself had been born in the same city and who also started his artist’s life there. Vardi picks from his picturesque hometown up a view of a suburb, but not from a critical angle, but a romantic and nostalgic one. Vardi, having been sitting in an attic, has looked at the wintry backyards of Supilinn and reflection of snow in the sky, slightly slanted buildings and a church tower.
