Nikolai Kull has this time abandoned the familiar wintry Tallinn cityscapes and has headed for exploring of the landscape of an anonymous island. Here we can boldly talk of improvisation – of an impetuous melody that has embraced the artist during his admiration of the nature. Quite differently from the grand and huge cityscapes, Kull is this time much more sensitive and sees the nature not from the sky, but at the height of his eyes. The high sky adds to the spaciousness, the scanty and empty landscape leaves less room for colours that the artist applies in bolder manner than usual. From one side the shades are modest brown ones, but from another side they give the powerful red the possibility to form the core of the picture. Next to Kull’s true-to-life cityscapes “Saare maastik” gives us a hunch of the artist’s more surprising and until now maybe less expected painter’s character.
