Hilja Läti describes in her Karel Liimand’s monograph in an expressive manner the importance of drawing in artist’s creation. Of course she starts with complaining that the number of the preserved Liimand drawings (and especially nude drawings, because of which the author was well-known) is very small, some in the funds of Tartu Museum of Arts, some in the collection of Ainto Bach. Therefore the current works are real findings. But additionally to the finding value, Hilja Läti also brings to the fore artistic reasons: “G.Reindorff claims that from the exhibiton student works of “Pallas” he especially well remembers Liimand’s powerful drawings of nudes. Having already been notable in drawing in Tallinn Vocational Art School, Liimand developed on the basis of the thorough studies of the “Pallas” school a picturesque drawing manner that was based on powerful form, light-shadow and soft expressive contours. While putting into practice his artistic plans, drawing has been for Liimand besides painting a significant expressive means. He permanently participated with his drawings at exhibitions. Liimand also took up teaching in “Pallas” as the teacher of drawing.”
