By the beginning of the 1940ies Richard Kaljo had become “the new Wiiralt” – the hopes connected with him were high, as he really was an unforgettable drawer. Unfortunately the time was the best and Kaljo does not have an evenly high-level creation. Still it is said that the ultimate peak of Kaljo’s works are illustrations to “The Three Musketeers” (Kaalu Kirme). Really, Kaljo is able to retell whole stories with extremely scanty means. Here can be found adventures, mystery, romantics, bravery – here is everything. Kaljo is a brilliant drawer, who has a special eye for details. It is known, how thorough were the artist’s preparations for the accomplishment of these works: preliminary works, the research of costumes and of the period, numerous sketches. The final outcome is really brilliant and inspires the whole generations again and again. Kalju just is not simply a superb illustrator, he himself is a storyteller. A short novel could be based on each of his scenes.
