As the favourite student of Ants laikmaa, Oskar Kallis received his basic art education from him and these influences can also be detected in “Maastik”. The national romantic trend that is in the best-known works by Kallis in figural compositions is expressed here in the landscape of his homeland. The motif is openly romantic, but the sensitive handling manner by Kallis emphasizes it even more. The lines are blurred, the sun is glowing and the viewer has been created the shot of the traditional Estonian home sickness and eternity. It is mature and thoughtful in an adult manner, but still it is youthfully romantic and sensitive.
