Idyll means a state close to ideal, well-being. The painting was completed at a time when Estonia was facing major global political changes and people's insecurity was very high. However, Paul Allik has painted a small personal pleasure of a soulful little table in the middle of cheerful spring colors. This approach brings to mind the French artist Henri Matisse, who defiantly chose a goldfish and the small pleasures of life to paint during World War I.
Paul Alliku's best-known performance as a pop singer was "Mustamäe valss" (1971), and Paul Alliku's institutional career as a painter reached the chairmanship of the Estonian Artists' Union in the mid-1990s. The painter's sunny personality also echoes in his work.
