Private things

Small graphics by Kadi Kurema is both sincere and humorous.

At the present exhibition are exposed more than thirty thick-texture etching and dry point works in the author’s well-known supreme quality.

In the Estonian language the word thing includes almost everything possible and impossible, but Kurema’s world is still one certain original phenomenon, which has become close to a large number of those, who enjoy graphical art.

Kurema’s small pictures are subtle and ironic, and when she even stings quite sharpy either a socially or mentally sensible spot, her sting is still warm and kind, not insulting or saddening. Irony through flowers, when we keep in mind the flower-petals containing paper made by Külli Grünbach-Sein, which Kurema tends to print her works on.

So works by Kurema are topical, at least for this person, who is aware of topical issues and can find them from the pictures. But Kurema’s works are also functioning in another, wide and generally human key. In them can be found memories, which create different associations in different viewers, even though in the picture has been depicted for instance a quite concrete strawberry or chestnut – animal from the artist’s  childhood.

Kurema’s works are characterised by white colours, which help to emphasize the traits, which are important for the author and help to enliven the printed picture. A lively and unique paper surface, a white brush strike, words and pieces which have been pressed in  with rubber seals, all of this makes her works unique, even though the whole impression has been printed with one plate. The author herself has called “Iseasjad” (“Things for themselves”) adventures of a small man in his small circle of life. But as almost everything is included in the word thing, also a small life can contain the whole human nature in its greatness and limitations. There can be found personal and public things, everyday and love-related things, things with two or three ends, both abstract and down-to-earth things, practical and timeless things.
