Landscapes and Still Lifes

On the exhibition in ArtDepoo Jaan Toomik who has dedicated the recent years mainly to installation and video art, displays only paintings, fresh and large. Nevertheless Toomik’s paintings cannot be regarded as something altogether separate from his films. Eha Komissarov has used the words “video-like visuality” to describe Toomik’s paintings, referring to the transitory visual language perceptible in the style of his painting, which is characteristic of a video artist.

ArtDepoo Gallery is entirely occupied by Jaan Toomik’s newest paintings that are linked by chrestomathic keywords – landscapes and still lifes. Toomik’s latest paintings displayed on the exhibition are intimate, personal and introvert insights into the author’s inner world and depths of his soul. The canvases are covered with condition landscapes that are brought to life through the artist’s inner empire; with still-lifes where places that real existing Estonian places are mixed with dream-like fantasy landscapes, with an occasional human figure.

Jaan Toomik (1961) graduated from Estonian Academy of Arts painting department and is currently working as a Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Arts of the Estonian Academy of Arts. He has participated in numerous domestic and foreign exhibitions, biennales and festivals for over 20 years. In the year 2004 35 international curators elected Toomik one of the 138 most influential contemporary artists, him being the only Estonian among them.

The traditional artist talk will take place on Tuesday, 11th of November at 5pm and is moderated by Heie Treier, an art critic and the Editor in chief of the magazine kunst.ee.

The exhibition will be open until 22nd of November.
