Carpe Diem!

After a long break between shows (her last exhibition was in Town Hall Gallery in 1994) the artist displays the recently completed graphic series “Moments” and compositions from the series “Light” brought together under a common heading. The technique used by the artist is very versatile, consisting mostly of digital printing, rainbow printing and serigraphy.

In her works Linda Tamm plays with colour and light, trying to create systems of them; yet symmetry and order is not her aim – things simply take shape as the game goes along, where the crossroads or stops of mind wandering are fixed as images, as captured moments.

In the same way as it is impossible to fully explain an abstract piece of art, the name of the exhibition in Latin “Carpe Diem” (seize/catch/use/enjoy the day) is untranslatable one-to-one. Linda Tamm, quoting the famous antique lyrist Horatio, leaves the viewer the freedom of interpretation (e.g. “capture the moment”), inviting to muse upon the meaningfulness of different situations be they easy or complex, hopeless or promising at first sight. Over time the experienced emotions acquire a different colouring when viewed from the distance as framed pictures in an exhibition hall. “Let’s try to recognize them and feel them directly and first-hand – without the disturbing reflection of glass”, the author seems to say. She summarizes her visually enjoyable creative message simply and to the point with the words of Artur Alliksaar: “There are no times better or worse. There’s only the moment where we are in. /…/“

Linda Tamm (1951) graduated from Estonian State Institute of Art specializing in design; she is a member of Estonian Association of Designers, the founder of T-DESIGN design studio and its manager since 1993.
