LONDON CALLING

Martin Saar, an artist living alternately in Tallinn and New York, opens his one-man exhibition “LONDON CALLING” in ArtDepoo gallery on 25 September 2010 at 19.00.

The paintings on display have originated from women who have influenced the artist, providing opportunities for greater generalizations and parallels. Idylls, expectations, pressures and dreamlike metamorphoses are the things experienced by the artist during the preparatory stage of the exhibition, and what he has wished to bring to the public.

The name of Martin Saar’s exhibition “London Calling” refers directly to the fact that from ArtDepoo the paintings will be taken to London, Cielo Gallery. On the other hand London in this context defines the desire for something exciting and immeasurable that sometimes women can bring into men’s lives.

Woman as a muse, whose parallel can be the emotions characteristic of a big city, is the hidden focus of this exhibition’s dialogue.

Saar attempts to reply the philosophical question whether an emotion that fascinates us in a woman can similarly fascinate us in an unfamiliar metropolis, as follows: Illusions need not always prove to be reality; what we see need not lie behind real faces and what we expect need not be behind real expectations.

The exhibited paintings depict women who are partially transformed; the alluded association of half-man and half-human expresses the world’s duality, the opposition of ideals and reality. Yet the paintings do not carry a depressive undertone. Rather the artist makes a hint to a reality known to him through light painting surface and animation-like solutions as if admitting a fact that doesn’t worry him. For him illusions are not pressure but rather a game.
