Anna Politkovskaja

Whatever happened to Anna Politkovskaja?

Katrin Koskaru, a young and talented painter, the laureate of the Young Artist Award of EAA of 2005, has taken in her first personal exhibition a dive into daily political problems and is worried about the unjust world. Some formats are extra large, others on the other hand are tiny, compositions are dynamic and themes alarming.

In the centre of the current series of paintings by Koskaru is horror and terror – the artist has become embodied as a Russian female journalist or rather war reporter Anna Politkovskaja and forwards us news of war tragedies in Chechenia (the mentioned enquiring journalist has written a number of books of the daily life of the inhabitants of Chechenia). It is really terrible, paintings reflect war tensions and battles and each visitor of the exhibition could thank God for having been born in Estonia and not in some world crisis centres, for example in Chechenia, Lebanon or Iraq.

The artist herself has commented her works as follows:
”I am interested in foreign politics and I am interested in Estonia and the role of an Estonian or rather my personal role in this foreign politics. It seems to me that war is such a theme that before you start to care for the matter seriously (maybe up to taking actual action yourself), you should first become really upset by the existing situation, maybe for example by imagining the war as vividly as you can. And thereafter you should start thinking about the way things really are...”
