Mati Kütt is one of those late talents of the Estonian painting, whose creation is accomplished in unknown places in an unsuspected handwriting. His works do arrive at exhibitions, also create there attention, but always remain to circle at the sideways of the art orbit. No, nobody has anything  a g a i n s t  the works by Mati Kütt (and how could they?). Simple these creational sources infiltrate from thoroughly unknown depths and bring along the most unexpected residual thoughts so that their connecting by the means of the customary art rhetoric is more than complicated.

Our entrance into the creation by Mati Kütt should most probably start as close as possible to the source, from where Kütt himself has also set off. We should understand that this time the exhibition does not start boom! at the gallery door, where we could successfully implement the present pattern of being at exhibitions: walking in front of the works, looking at them, drawing parallels with art history, understanding the meanings of modern theories, analyzing, deducing, enjoying. It seems that in case of Kütt we must previously enter the universe of Mati Kütt as an i n t e g e r. What does that mean? Does that mean that we should get acquainted with Kütt´s present creation of films and art in order to understand anything at all? No, this is definitely not the case.

It means that we have to choose a completely different tactics for approaching Kütt´s paintings as we have used before. Here we are not so much the exhibition visitors, as novel readers or film watchers. Kütt is doing two things simultaneously: he is painting for us pictures, but he is creating behind them a whole world. We must understand that by coming to Kütt´s exhibition we not only step in front of the works, but we also enter a new universe. Most probably none of the present rules exist here.

One may guess that while characterizing the current exhibition there are being used the following notions: surrealism, absurd, grotesque, abundant use of colours. Still, maybe we should in the first range pay attention to the human level of these paintings - the fantasy that could first of all seem interesting and inspiring, the fairy-tale style that gives us a hunch of the possibility of the existence of “the other worlds”, the sense of humour that dilutes serious utopias into the water-glass of joy, as even though in the universe, the initial action of this series still takes place in imagination.

It has been claimed that the paradise awaits us in heaven. The cosmos odyssey was initiated for finding out if it really was so. Co-operation with the Russians was successful, they transported me nicely with their booster “Stalker” together with “The Swallow” to the orbit. Then I already had to manage on my own. The air got thinner, the head became lighter. There started to appear picturesque views of the paradise …

Then Sigmund called me back to my hospital room.
